“The Spider And The Fly” – The Rolling Stones

Sittin’ thinkin’ sinkin’ drinkin
Wondering what I’d do when I’m through tonight
Smoking moping, maybe just hopin
Some little girl will pass on by
Don’t wanna be alone
but I love my girl at home
I remember what she said
She said, “My, my, my don’t tell lies, keep fidelity in your head
My my my, don’t tell lies.
When you’re done you should go to bed
Don’t say hi, like a spider to a fly
Jump right ahead and you’re dead”
Sit up, fed up, low down go round
Down to the bar at the place I’m at
Sitting drinking, supereficially thinking
About the rinsed-out blonde on my left
Then I said, “hi” like a spider to a fly
Remebering what my little girl said
She was common, flirty, she looked about thirty
I would have run away but I was on my own
She told me later she’s a machine operator
She said she liked the way I held the microphone
I said my, my, like the spider to the fly
Jump right ahead in my web

Nasty Spider – By John Whittaker, 1975

I CAN SEE A NASTY SPIDER, CREEPING UP ON ME.
HE SAYS HE’S GONNA GOBBLE ME UP, AND EAT ME WITH HIS TEA.
HE SAYS THAT HE WILL BUT HE WONT,
HE SAYS THAT HE WILL BUT HE WONT,
AND I K-N-O-W…DADDY TOLD ME SO!

SWALLOW, SWALLOW IN THE SKY, WHY DO YOU FLY SO HIGH,
I WISH THAT I COULD FOLLOW YOU AND FLY INTO THE SKY.
I WISH THAT I COULD BUT I CAN’T,
I WISH THAT I COULD BUT I CAN’T.
AND I K-N-O-W,CAUSE ME FEATHERS WON’T GROW.

MOLEY MOLEY DOWN YOUR HOLEY,WHY ARE YOU SO SHY.
WON’T YOU COME UP AND BE MY FRIEND, MOLEY WON’T YOU TRY.
I KNOW YOU’D LIKE BUT YOU WON’T,
I KNOW YOU’D LIKE BUT YOU WON’T.
AND I K-N-O-W, TEACHER TOLD ME SO.

I CAN SEE A NASTY SPIDER, CREEPING UP ON YOU.
HE SAYS HE’S GONNA GOBBLE YOU UP, AND EAT YOU WITH HIS STEW.
AN IF HE SAYS HE WILL, THEN HE WILL,
AN IF HE SAYS HE WILL THEN HE WILL.
AND I K-N-O-W, CAUSE I TOLD HIM TO.

Itsy Bitsy Spider – EliZe

Itsy bitsy spider, waiting on the wall
You better watch out or she will have you caught
It is a constant strain, constant pain watching you deny
That her plans to catch you, starts when you tell lies
No matter how obvious you seem like you’re blind
Can’t you feel problems that creep up from behind
Baby, you are not a boy there are things that you should see
The strings she’s tied you must cut loose, it’s up to you not me,
It’s up to you not me

Itsy bitsy spider climbing on the wall
Better watch your step or in her web you’ll fall
Spin you round in circles in a net of doubt
Baby if you’re stuck I’m done with you
Cause I won’t get you out
The way she’s got you worked out she can’t have no rest
You must wake up she’s crawling in our nest
You’re hands are tied we are stuck in a web of lies
I think it’s time we said our goodbyes
Baby, you act like a boy there are things I know you’ll see
The strings we tied I cut you loose you’re not a man to me,
You’re not a man to me

Itsy bitsy spider climbing on the wall
Better watch your step or in her web you’ll fall
Spin you round in circles in a net of doubt
Baby if you’re stuck I’m done with you
Cause I won’t get you out

Itsy bitsy spider climbing all over my wall, I’m telling you
Everyday a new mess, cause you are so spineless
Denying when you can, she’s trying to steel my man
Baby don’t you know that it in the end
If she managed to convince you
I’d rather be her best friend You get it?
Itsy bitsy spider climbing on the wall
Better watch your step or in her web you’ll fall

And here is the children’s version of the song:

Spiders in the Dressing Room – From the Toy Dolls

I Was Getting Dressed Late One Night
Along Came A Spider And I Got A Fright
Oh I Could Not Squash It Flat
No Matter How I Tried
And When It Looked Me In The Eye
I Ran Away To Hide

I Put On Me Doctor Martin Shoes
A Battle With The Spider That I Wasn’t Gonna Loose
A Kick From The Left A Kick From The Right
I Was On The Floor But I Was Alright
It Was Gonna Be A Long Long Night

Spiders In The Dressing Room
Spiders Everywhere
Spider In The Dressing Room Beware
Spiders In The Dressing Room
Spiders Everywhere
Spider In The Dressing Room Beware

Things Were Getting Hot And I Had To Take A Chance
The Spider Got Impatient
Started Crawling Up Me Pants
I Shook It Off Me Leg Thump It Hit The Ground
Everything Was Silent So I Didn’t Make A Sound

I Crossed The Room As Happy As Can Be
I Had Killed The Spider Now It Couldn’t Bother Me

But With Me Arm On The Light
He Was There Ready For A Fight
It Was Gonna Be A Long Long Night

It Was Getting Late And The Spider Wasn’t Dead

An Audience Had Gathered Round
And I Was Going Red
I Put A Jam Jar On The Floor
The Spider Crawled Inside It
I Screwed The Lid Back On The Top
And Threw The Jar Outside

At A Party Late That Night
Everything Was Bright And Gay
We Played All Our Pop Records And Danced The Night Away
Early In The Morning Came A Knocking At The Door
I Opened It Slowly Guess What I Saw
It Was Gonna Be A Long Long Night

While I was looking at your web page I printed out some of the spider songs that I wasn’t familiar with.  I have been doing a spider unit with my first graders for about 15 years and I’m sending you a song that I teach them every year during “Spider Month”. You sing it to the tune of ‘Daisy, Daisy’.

Spider, spider

You are a friend, I know.
You eat bugs that eat little plants that grow,
You really are not so scary,
You’re not so very hairy,
You have 8 feet,
Your web is neat,
Little spidery friend of mine.

If you have never heard this it is a great classic rock tune from the 60’s.  give it a spin!

Boris The Spider, by The Who

Look, he’s crawling up my wall
Black and hairy, very small
Now he’s up above my head
Hanging by a little thread

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Now he’s dropped on to the floor
Heading for the bedroom door
Maybe he’s as scared as me
Where’s he gone now, I can’t see

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

There he is wrapped in a ball
Doesn’t seem to move at all
Perhaps he’s dead, I’ll just make sure
Pick this book up off the floor

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

Creepy, crawly
Creepy, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly
Creepy, creepy, crawly, crawly

He’s come to a sticky end
Don’t think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl ’round
He’s embedded in the ground

Boris the spider
Boris the spider

There’s a Spider on the Wall, Tune: Twinkle Little Star

There’s a spider on the wall
If he’s careful he won’t fall
He moves slowly down the wall
I can watch him crawl and crawl
I wonder if he minds my stare
Or does he know and just not care?

Here is a similar song “There’s a spider on the floor” on YouTube:

I’m a Little Spider, Tune: I’m a Little Teapot

I’m a little spider watch me spin
If you’ll be my dinner
I’ll let you come in
Then I’ll spin a web to hold you tight
And gobble you up in one big bite!

Spin Little Spider, Tune: Farmer in the Dell

Spin little spider, spin! (spin around)
Spin little spider, spin!
‘Round and ’round and up and down
Spin little spider, spin!

Crawl little spider, crawl! (crawl around)
Crawl little spider, crawl!
‘Round and ’round and up and down
Crawl little spider, crawl!

Dance little spider, dance! (dance around)
Dance little spider, dance!
‘Round and ’round and up and down
Dance little spider, dance!

Oh, That Spider! Tune: Oh, Susanna

I was sitting in my room one day
When it came right through the door
A big spider sped right by me
Went racing ‘cross the floor

CHORUS:
Oh, that spider!
Oh, how it scared me so!
But spiders can be good friends
And so I let it go.

I watched it crawl up on the wall,
To find a spot just right.
It spun a web so beautiful
And then went out of sight.

CHORUS:

Now bugs and flies do not scare me
For I know that it’s true.
That a spiderweb is good to have
Bugs stick to it like glue.

Tammy the Spider, Tune: Alice the Camel

Sammy the spider has eight legs,
Sammy the spider has eight legs,
Sammy the spider has eight legs,
‘Cause Sammy’s a spider, of course!

The Spider in the Web, Tune: Farmer in the Dell

The spider in the web.
The spider in the web.
Spin, spin, oh, watch him spin,
The spider in the web.

The spider eats a _____. (any kind of bug)
The spider eats a _____.
Spin, spin, oh, watch him spin,
The spider in the web.

Here is the tune “Farmer in the dell” for this song:

The Eensy-Weensy Spider

The eensy-weensy spider went up the water-spout. (Interlace thumbs and wiggle fingers like spider-legs in time to the music while “climbing”)

Down came the rain and washed the spider out! (Sweep hands downward and outward)

Out came the sun, and dried up all the rain, (Raise hands above head with fingers spread to represent the sun)

And the eensy-weensy spider went up the spout again. (repeat gesture from first line.)
