Spider Photos - Wolf Spiders

Here's some photos sent in by viewers. Wolf Spiders are large, hairy spiders which are usually patterned with a mixture of black, gray, and brown.  Wolf spiders, especially large ones, look very similar to spiders in the Pisauridae family (nursery web and fishing spiders), but wolf spiders are usually more robust, with shorter legs. There are more than 2000 wolf spider species. Wolf spiders have 8 eyes.  As with all spiders, wolf spiders have 8 legs, 2 body parts (cephalothorax and abdomen), and fang-like mouthparts called "chelicerae."  Like all spiders, young wolf spiders hatch from eggs and look like tiny adults.  They shed their skin as they grow.  Most wolf spiders live for several years.  In many species, female wolf spiders lay dozens of eggs at one time and wrap them in a large ball of web.  The female will then carry  the egg sac with them until the spiderlings hatch.  The gestation period is 9 to 27 days depending on the surrounding temperature and species of wolf spider. Upon hatching the, spiderlings will live on the mother's back for a few weeks until they are large enough to hunt on their own. Wolf spiders are active hunters that patrol the ground for insects, other spiders, and similar creatures.  They do not use webs to capture prey.  They live by the thousands in leaf litter and grassy areas.  Some wolf spiders build small burrows and defend a territory, others are free-roaming.  Because they are so numerous, and such voracious predators, wolf spiders are a very important part of any ecosystem in which they occur. Wolf spiders are not normally pests, but they often wander into homes.  They can bite, but they are not considered dangerous.  Wolf spiders look similar to brown recluses, and are often killed because they resemble these dangerous spiders.  With a little practice, it is easy to tell the difference between wolf spiders and brown recluses. There are several types of wolf spiders and I have tried to group them accordingly below. All photos are copyright to their owners and may not be reproduced without permission. OTHER WOLF SPIDERS (2)

The surest way to recognize a wolf spider is by the general stout body shape, the eye arrangement and by the fact that they are usually not in a web. Their general body shape is somewhat stout with the cephalothorax and abdomen of about equal sizes. The legs also are stout, fairly even in length and strong enough to support the spiders weight. The legs can be compared to those of many web building spiders whose legs are much longer and thinner. In wolf spiders, the anterior eyes are made up of 4 small eyes in a row, and the posterior eyes are 4 large eyes arranged in two rows. From a front view, you can see a row of 4 small anterior eyes with two larger eyes above them and 2 eyes further back on the head. The large eyes are significant in their behaviour: wolf spiders do have good eyesight (especially for spiders) and use vision fairly extensively for prey capture, courtship and aggressive interactions. The posterior eyes give the spiders vision above them and behind them and are significant in avoiding predation or capture.

Hi Glen. I live just outside of Buffalo, NY and I've been seeing these spiders for a few months, it's a little warmer than usual at this time of year, but I managed to get a pretty good picture of this guy tonight. Is this definitely a wolf spider? If so, is this species common in this area? I've lived in this house for 12 years and have never seen them before and lived in this area all my life (almost 34 years). We have train tracks behind our house, so I imagine that anything could hitch a ride and show up here. From what I've read, they don't generally bite people, is this true? Also, are they nocturnal or diurnal? Any info is greatly appreciated! Feel free to use the photo on your site. Thank you,

Hi, Thought you might be interested in this one. Ive never seen a spider like it though it does have a similar shape to a tarantula (I think so anyway). Was wondering if you can ID it for me? Hello, I find the attached spiders in my house a lot. Mostly in the laundry room that is connected to a small bathroom downstairs. They are not aggressive, when I do find them I catch them in a jar and put them as far away from my house as possible. They get pretty big..this one was bigger than a half dollar. Can you tell me if it's part of the wolf spider family or if not if it could be venomous? Thanks, Elizabeth

Hey Glen, Here are two spiders I found this weekend at my home in rural Northern Illinois. The first looks to be carrying a pea-sized egg sac, and was about 2 inches toe to toe. The second looked slightly smaller, but had no sac. They were in different areas near my garden, and I didn't see any signs of a web anywhere. I'm guessing some kind of Wolf Spider, but thought you might be able to give me a positive ID. Any ideas on either? Thanks! Jon

This spider is giving me fits. I am terrified of it. At first it was one in a summer and now it's multiple each night. My fear goes away when I know what they are! I live in Las Cruces, NM. Is it a wolf spider? I am familiar with other wolf spiders and it looks different to me. Tall! Aggressive. If you get too close it will turn around and lift it's front legs at you.

Hello! I live in Orlando FL and I am just curious what type of spider this is. I googled it and it seems to be a species of wolf spider, but I am not positive. I found a smaller one in the house two weeks ago and this guy outside this morning. (may even be the same one, since I set it free) He was crawling in the grass and was trying to get at a beetle that was flying above. Including his legs, he was nearly the size of the palm of my hand. Thanks for your time! Delia

Hi there, wondering if you can help me please to identify this spider? I am in New Zealand and found this little guy (or gal?!) out in the garden, in the rim of my wheelbarrow. Fairly small (body - not including legs - about 7mm at a guess). It was very fast moving. I only managed to snap 2 pics before it ran away and I lost sight of it in the lawn! Sorry I didn't get all of it in perfect focus but hopefully this is good enough to get an ID. I was wondering if it was a type of small wolf spider but haven't seen one this colour before. The orange was quite striking in real life and really caught my eye. I believe you are in Australia so I'm not sure if you can help but I am struggling to find an NZ based expert and saw a link to your site on the NZ guide to soil invertebrates website Sofianna

Hi Glen, I found these spiders and have good guesses in what they might be. Would they be yellow sac on the top and wolf spider on the bottom? I found the spider on the top in my bathroom on the ceiling. There are more like it but don't all look exactly the same. The spider on the bottom I found in my strawberry patch. The day before I found this same exact type of spider with a white egg sac attached to her abdomen. Thanks for looking!!! Cristina

I don't want to be a pest but I can't believe I just found another very large spider. She was under a piece of plastic that we had on the ground to place corn on for the wild rabbits. I moved it to the side so I could cut the grass around it and she was tucked underneath. She had made a hole in the ground and also had a leaf around her as you will see in the photos. There was also a black baby snake under the plastic right near her. I used a stick to clear away the brush around her so I could get a better look and that is when she picked up her egg sack which was huge and tucked it underneath her body. She was not moving for anything and was going to protect her egg sack even if I killed her. I was impressed that she did not run away but instead stood her ground. She was very accommodating and let me get a few good shots. So if I could bother you again, can you tell me what she is? Thanks you so much for your time. Sincerely, Melinda
