Spider Photos -  Silver Argiope (1)

Here's some photos of Silver Argiopes (Argiope argentata) This spider is one of nature's many pest control agents. Its appetite for insects results in its keeping many burgeoning insect populations in check. As a group, orb-weaving spiders consume many tonnes of insects every year. You can find silver argiopes among shrubbery, tall plants and flowers in meadows and gardens. They weave a distinctive zigzag pattern within their web - an easy way to identify the presence of this particular species. They are not considered dangerous to humans although like all spiders can bite.

Hi. I hope I'm not being too cheeky in asking for your help. There are a few spiders that I used to see a lot when I lived in Greece, and try as I have, I just can't identify them. I would really love to know what they were, and in the hope that you might be willing to help I've attached a few photos to this email. Many thanks, Katrine

I have scanned many sites of pictures of spiders and have not seen this one anywhere. It was taken just outside fort lauderdale, florida. Tip of legs across was about 4 inches. The colorful markings have me wondering if it is venomous. I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Hi Glen, I've checked out your wonderful website and didn't see anything that looked like this spider. It has been living on the outside of a second floor window at work for several months. We have been watching it closely. The web is a normal web but then has zig zag type in fills as you can see in the picture. I'm in West Palm Beach, Florida. Any idea what this beautiful spider is? It is black with silver metallic. Thank you, Mandy

Hi Glen, I found your web page when I was researching a spider we found in our garden in Patagonia, Argentina and thought you might appreciate some pictures I took. The kids called her Charlotte as soon as she appeared in late summer (August in our part of the world). She took up residence in a rosemary bush, eventually laying her eggs towards the very end of autumn (pics attached - I rotated them for dramatic effect!). She hung around for a few days before disappearing, now missing presumed dead. Thanks for your site - it's very informative. Enjoy the photos. Kind regards, Nick

Again used the Google translator: My God! I am very happy to meet you! Her picture is attached. I captured her day 22/04/2011. Day 02/05 was the first time I saw her eating. Devoured a fly, even very large. Now I am calm because I know she does not die of hunger. I'm thinking of some way to catch flies now. Ah! I do not have pictures of the new house he made for her, but I send you soon too, if I'm not holding you back, of course. So thank you once again, and I'm waiting for any information about my spider, JuhJuh. And a question: Is it true that spiders do not eat every day? Like, eat once every 3 / 7 days? And water? Take? His name is Glen?

Hi Glen My green lynx spiders are thriving again this year on my rose bushes here in Southern Cal. I found a few really cool spiders on a walk this weekend, down at Bolsa Chica wetlands. They were hanging out in some prickly pear cactus, and coastal sage brush. I only managed one decent picture. Cool orb weavers, don't know what kind though. Peace~ Trish
