Jumping Spiders 2013-14

Commonly called Jumping spiders, the Salticidae are also affectionately referred to as  Charlies, Herbies or Salties. They are very common around the home and their anthropomorphic nature endears them to most people. The family name is derived from the Latin "salto" which means to dance with pantomimic gestures. This is the largest spider family and includes more than 5000 species worldwide. These spiders are harmless to man although there have been complaints where this comical, engaging animal has been accused of nasty bites. Here's some photos sent in by viewers.

JUMPING SPIDERS

Jumping spiders (Salticidae) are the personalities of the spider world. Though generally small in size (up to 12 mm body length), their large eyes, prodigious jumping ability, often brilliant colours and cocky, inquisitive activity make them very appealing. Many are daylight hunters, using their excellent vision to track, stalk and calculate distance, before suddenly leaping on their prey, propelled by their strong back legs. Males are often more strikingly coloured, patterned or adorned with leg or body hair tufts than are females. They use these adornments to impress the females during often elaborate courtship displays. Information - Australian Museum

I'm not sure if you know a lot about spiders and can identify most of them but after looking at your site, I figured to send you an email cause I'm very curious what this spiders called. I found this on my wall and it seems vicious. I tried going around it to get a better view and it would move and raise it's arm. So I took lint tape and attached it to my broom and made it stuck to tape. That's how I was able to get a good pic of it. Even when it was stuck on the tape, I moved around it to get its face and it managed to escape half way and raise it's arms at me again as you can see. I'm hoping you can identify this for me and tell me what would've happened if this thing were to bite me cause I've been having goosebumps all day. Thank you for your time and sorry for the long explanation hahah hoping to get a reply back, Thanks!

Sending a spider photo for your perusal...It walked calmly out of my bookcase this morning, seemingly unafraid, and appeared to acknowledge my presence. I'm in Los Angeles, CA and haven't seen this one before, but looking online it seems to be a variety of jumping spider. It was about 1/2" to 3/4" total across. I carefully put it in a jar to carry it outside, and took this iPhone photo for the record. Thanks, Rick

Hi Glen I was looking over your website and I was wondering if you could identify a spider for me? I work in Public Health in the UK and have received a complaint regarding the spider in the above attachment. The spider was found in a box of grapes which came from the USA (I assume North America) and was about as big as my thumbnail. Is there any chance you could have a look at it and let me know what it is? It looks like a really small tarantula but as we donít normally get any exciting arachnids in this country my knowledge on them is relatively poor. Many thanks for your help Gavin

Glen, Sorry about the poor quality of the pictures - it wouldn't stay still. I found this spider climbing up my bathroom wall today in Seattle, WA, with no evidence of a web. Since I don't recognize it as one of our house spiders, I think it came in from outside, so I caught it in a glass and put it back out. (I like spiders, but I'm definitely no expert at identifying them.) This is a little one, maybe 3/8." It's very pretty with the brown and yellow coloration, but I have not been able to find pictures of anything like it. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks. The last picture is of a long-bodied cellar spider with her egg sac, who has made a web directly above my bed and tends to stay pretty still. Danna

Thanks! So fun to know a little more about the spider. With your information, I looked around the internet a bit, and I think it may be a Hentzia Mitrata. http://www.cirrusimage.com/spider_jumping_h_mitrata.htm

I was walking in a desert in SoCal when I came to a rest. Upon my rest arose a visitor out of a tiny, yet distinct hole in the ground. The Spider came towards me, pausing for a moment, only to raise its body and observe me with its beady eyes(two of which were unusually large and close together in the center of the front of the face). The spider continued toward me without out a single fear or apprehension. It was small in size with thick, hairy legs. The color was a dark reddish brown with grey patches on the legs and fangs. It had a large white spot, similar to the jumping spider but located on a different area of the back. Another distinctive characteristic was the yellow, almost pointed butt of the creature, and even more intriguing was the red band around the eyes. Although the photos are not the best quality, I am hopeful that there is enough detail among the photos of the spider, the eyes, and the whole it crawled out of, for someone to help me identify it. Greatly interested and appreciated. -Tiana
