Spider Photos - Crab Spiders

Here's some photos Crab or Flower spider photos. Crab spiders belong to the family Thomisidae. They get their name because they move sideways, like crabs. The body is not as hairy as in most spiders. The colour of the spider is adapted to the hunting terrain they use and is mostly extravagant. They live in flowers and plants and are sometimes called Flower Spiders because they are often found inside a flower waiting for an unsuspecting bee to come along. They also live in grasses and low vegetation. The female grows 6-7 mm.  They are slow-moving spiders which do not actively hunt like Wolf Spiders. Instead, they remain stationary and await in ambush for some unsuspecting insects to land in front of them. Their bite is not dangerous to humans. The first two pairs of legs in most Crab Spiders are longer and heavier than the third and fourth pairs, and are armed with spines for holding and grasping prey. The females usually stand guard with their egg sacs. The egg sacs are fastened to the vegetation and are usually flat.

Curios what kind of spider this is? Looks to big to be a wolf spider. Thank you very much for your web site still reading up on it.

..

1 November, 2016:
Hello, I am reaching out because I found the spider in the attached photo in my bathrobe this morning. I found one exactly like it about 2 weeks ago in my bed, second picture. I'm starting to get a little freaked out and was wondering if you could help me identify it. I was thinking it might be a Crab Spider, but I've never heard of one before I started googling descriptors of the spider I found. I live in Central Washington State, and we're a desert climate. We just bought this house and like I said, I'm starting to get creeped out! Thank you for your help! Haley

Hi Glen, Hope you can ID this very small spider II spotted a few days ago out in a hi-desert scrub field between Sedona and Cottonwood. Looking forward to your reply....Denise K.

25 June, 2016:
Hi, my name is Amber. I live downstairs in the basement, I have come across a few different spiders down here. This one in particular is the first of its kind that I have seen. Mostly seen grass spiders or wolf spiders, I m not sure as I dont wish to get too close. Looking around a bit I think the one in the 2 pics I attached may be a hobo spider....I'm not sure though. Lately the basement has had a humidity level of approx 75%. It is at 50% now. Also where the spider is at the dark group of stripes on the sheet in the second pic are about a centimeter in length. Not sure of any of that info is really needed... Please help me identify this spider or point me in the right direction. It's color seemed more of a yellowish. Located in northern Missouri 20 min from Iowa line. Thank You in advance.

Reply: No this is not a hobo spider, it is a crab spider and harmless - glen

I am bill from concord nc, just north of charlotte nc. I saw this spider on my patio table today and was wondering what spider it is? And if it dangerous? Has a weird back , almost like a face on it. The pictures are of the same spider. Wanted a white backround for easier if. But it moved off the table when I tried to put a white paper under it. Let me know. Thanks. Bill b.

15 October, 2015:
I have spent hours looking through photos and can't get a positive ID using the attached photos a friend took of a spider that he found in his entryway. This is in Oklahoma City. The spider was on the ground but might have been brushed off a door jam or wall in the entryway. It was about the size of a quarter. I'm positive it isn't a brown recluse because he got a good pic where you can see the eyes, and the pattern isn't right. My best guess is a sac spider, but the color pattern just doesn't seem quite right for either the broad faced or yellow sac spider. I'm usually pretty good identifying spiders, but this one really has me stumped.

Okay. I found a spider in my house and I was just curious as to what he is? I hope that the pictures are good enough for you to identify.

Hello, please let me know if this is not the correct way to submit a photo for your “unidentified spiders” section. I live in Minnesota and found this in the sink of my camper. It was about an inch wide. I have searched and searched and can’t find anything that looks like this spider online. I am really curious and if you can help I’d greatly appreciate it. I guess you’d be glad to know that I managed to get it out of my camper and into the grass of my yard without killing it. Please let me know if I can answer any questions – thank you so much for your help J J J

I found this in a shoebox. I live in St. Cloud, MN. I hate spiders and am so disgusted! The picture didn't show size very well. It was really little. Smaller than a dime, I'd say. I held camera about 3 inches above it. Must have been dying cuz it didn't move at all when I moved shoe box and other things around inside the box. Please help me know how dangerous it is and if it's likely there are more.... ugh. Feeling sick thinking about it.... Thanks for your time. Hayley

Hello- My name is Nicole and I live in the Seattle Washington area. I caught this spider today hanging down from the ceiling in my basement (I didn't really want it dropping onto my lunch;) ) I see a fair few spiders since I'm in the basement alot, but I didnt recognize this one as a kind I have seen before. I perused the common types on your page and didnt necessarily see anything that looks like too close of a match. It probably would have fit nicely on a quarter. Sorry for the photo quality- I did use my phone as that is what I had handy while relocating it. My apologies if you do already have another image of this guy on your page. thanks Nicole

Glen, Thank you for maintaining such a useful site as spiderzrule.com. I’ve used it a couple of times to identify the spiders I photograph (and I post your URL when I do). I’m sending in three photos that you are more than welcome to post on your site as examples. Thanks again for the useful information. Also, here is a link to my latest jumping spider photo, which might have been too big to e-mail. But you can download it from my Flickr page at a smaller size if you would like. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jeffeppinette/7361489270 Regards, Jeff

In searching to find out what the heck kind of spider I found on my house I came across your website. It was behind our barbeque. This one is pretty boring judging by the photos you have on your site... It was maybe 1/2" long, and seemed to move really slow. The body seemed almost like a crab shell. I'm in the Pacific Northwest / Seattle area. Any idea what it could be? Thanks!

Several photos of a miniature spider in Siberia, Russia, in the region of Khakassia. It is on my sweater, and in some pictures, it is trying to hide in the ribbing of the sweater. I only saw one, probably because it is so small it would normally go unnoticed. Do you have any idea what kind it is?  Melody

I believe a cousin was bit by this spider. She ended up with an infection from a bit, and at the emergency room. The doctor asked if she had been bit by a spider. This spider was found where she had been hanging out, and is actually in the handle of the screen door. She may have grabbed it,but we need to know what kind of spider this is.

Hi, I took a photograph of this spider in Kent, UK. Could you help me trying to identify it? It has been in the corner of the ceiling and not moving since I saw it like 5 days a go. Although, it did move when a small fly was hanging around, below there is a link for the video of the moment. After taking the photograph, I observed some rounded yellow balls, could you confirm if these are eggs? Feel free to share this image as long as you quote my full name, thank you. I have spoken with a couple of other people and believe that I have identified this spider as Mecaphesa (formerly named Misumenops) in the Crab Spider family. Hi, I keep finding these spiders in my house; could you please help me identify them? I would just like to be certain they're not brown recluses. Their behavior doesn't seem to fit, as I have seen these spiders marching right across the bathroom floor when the lights had been on for some time. I usually do see them at night, but still in open and brightly lit areas. I have four pictures, two of each spider. One of them has already been squished, sorry. It startled me. The other one reminds me a bit of a crab. Both are pretty small, less than the size of a dime. I live in central Oklahoma. Any help in identifying these would certainly help me sleep easier! Thanks! First I’d like to say you have a great website, I frequent it often. I’m sending you a few pictures of a small little monster I found in my home one evening.
