Sorry
but I have not had enough webs sent it to pick Web of the Month
Awards any more, but you can still check out past winners and their webs
below. I'll still keep putting webs on this page so
send them in! There are 2 types of spiders
- the hunting spiders
like the wolf spiders and tarantulas and the web spinning spiders
like the Argiopes and Garden Orb Weavers. All spiders can spin silk
but only the web spinning spiders spin webs for their homes.
Check out my new page on web construction

Reply: It's a garden orb weaver and
it will die off come Winter.
11 November, 2007:
Hi Guys, Great site. Here is our "Charlotte". She began as a
very small spider in the spring, and got very large over the
summer, catching mostly moths, but also a few flies and an
occasional Yellow Jacket. This digital night time shot does not
do her justice. She has one spine on her back and an interesting
dark pattern on her underside. She has moved from the eve, to
the ceiling of the covered deck now, to stay out of the cold,
and seems to have stopped rebuilding her nest. She seems to be
hibernating or sleeping at least, and is getting smaller now -
perhaps
just living off her summer fat? We are wondering if these orb
weavers live through the winter out in the open like this and
make it to spring to start over? We've grown attached to her,
and wonder if we should put her inside in an aquarium, with
leaves and
bugs, or just leave her alone? Our winters are not very cold -
the nights are in the high 30s to low 40s right now, but in late
Dec. & Jan. will get a little below freezing. Thanks,
-Val

Hi, Here's a couple of web pix I took. I am terrified of
spiders, but I am also amazed by them and their webs. Hope you
like the pix.

18 October, 2007:
Hi Glen: We recently welcomed a new visitor to our
outside deck. In looking through your photos, I believe this
spider to be a Shamrock Orb Weaver, and I've named her
Fiona. She spins such lovely webs, and her anchors are at
least 3 ft. long. I'm attaching a photo of her web, which
was taken at dusk -- she only seems to come out at night.
Plus, I've included a photo of her in the daytime in a
corner under the deck -- she is very shy, it seems. I have
no clue if she's male or female, but I'm making the call.
Thanks,
Johanna, Warwick, R.I., USA

Look at the refracted color on
the web shot with a wink light before dawn, the web seems to act as
a prism (chemistry of web composition or thickness) while out of
focus, the depth of field is the visible grass beyond I an entirely
fascinated by the colors of the web which I had never seen
before----please use or share as you feel fit, thanks ellen

Hi, Don’t know much about spiders but I
think this guy is a Garden Orb Weaver. I live in San Diego,
CA and he/she’s been weaving up a gigantic web in front of
our kitchen window. We watch it every night at around dinner
time as it does some repairs. Fascinating to watch a spider
like that spin. And the web can be quite a sight on a wet
foggy morning. Thanks for your site, it’s great.

Dear Glen, I found your site while trying to find out what kind of
spider is in the photo and am fascinated by the wallpaper look of
the web...the pattern looks like leaves. Any info would be most
helpful as it is very near a 3 yr old boys play area. We don’t want
to relocate it if it is harmless. Appreciate any info you can
provide. Yes, you can post the photo too. Many thanks! Donna |

Hi,
Thank you for helping me identify the spider that has been
hanging around my
front porch since last week. I was able to find others like him
on
Spiderzrule and have identified him as a Garden Orb Weaver. I am
relieved
to learn that he won't harm me, my husband, or our puppy. I have
attached a
couple good photos of him and his web. Feel free to post these
photos if
you would like to. I live in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA. Thank you!

Hello from Pittsburgh! I found this spider hanging above my
walkway at my apartment to the right of the web are pine trees
and to the left is our building. No clue what it is but I have a
2 1/2 month old baby and I want to make sure it is not going to
bite her!!!... or us!!! Thanks Michael
