The Jewelled Spider is also known by its
Latin name - Gasteracantha Minax, meaning "threatening and
projecting". They are also known as spiny orb weavers and are part
of the orb weaving spider family. This spider's body is very broad
and grows to the size of a 20c piece, with its 8 legs being the
length of a pin (fairly short for a spider). Its abdomen is
strikingly coloured with bright yellows, orange or reds as well as
white and black. Six stout spines (long and sharp) come from the
border of the abdomen.

This little spider was found spinning its web between a grapefruit tree and flowers in our garden. Its legs are pink and its ventral view has what looks like an old-fashioned telephone dial in the middle. It seems these spiders are found world-wide, but have you any idea where they originated?
Also, can you identify the spider in the 4th picture for me,
Thanks,
Sally, Vic, Australia

Here is a picture of what appears to be a spined spider who has been in the same spot by our back porch for about 2 months. She builds great webs. We found two more in other places in the yard. Thanks for your site and the information. Feel free to post the picture.

Hi Glen,
I found this wicked little spider in Barbados on my last adventure Nov 09. No idea what he is about the size of ones thumb nail. Looks spikey with a face on his back if you look close.
Attached is the picture.
If anyone has ideas of what he is, I am curious.
Thanks

Found in my son's yard in Sheldon. I always thought these
spiders were much bigger from the photos I've been sent but in
reality it is only about 1 cm across the body. I was delighted
to finally see one on the flesh and hope to get some better
photos soon. glen |

Hi there,
Love your website and all 8legged creatures!!
Got a nice one for you,
I found this spider during a hike on a little Island of the coast of Penang (Malaysia).
Could it be some family of the spined micrathena?
The spider had a net between 2 twigs about 6feet high in a tree. And I’m guessing it’s body was approx.25mm long and the horned surface maybe 40mm wide.
Thank you very much for your help,
Keep up the good work,
Dennis |

G'day Glen,
I found this small spider (about 10-12mm) in my yard and came across your site while trying to identify it. I am presuming it is some kind of Jewel Spider, but I haven't found a picture of one like this anywhere and thought perhaps you could help? I live on a rural property just outside Darwin NT. Please find a photo attached.

Can you identify both of these spiders; I
believe they are types of orb spiders. Both
pictures were taken inside my pool cage. I found
the spider in DSCN0364 on many websites
identifying it; I’m more interested in making
sure DSCN0947 is an orb. Thanks!

Hello, i'm a mum from South Australia, my son and i
found this interesting little spider in the yard, and
googled to find out what it was! I was surprised to see
so many around the world, this is a shot of her
underbelly. From what we found on the net it appears to
be a Spiny or Jewelled Spider. We thought she was
beautiful and thought the pic worth sharing.

Here are a couple pictures for your collection. The first
is a Jewelled Spider and the second I believe is either a St. Andrews Cross
or a Black and Yellow Argiope? These are both from West-Central Georgia.
